Generator troubleshooting guide

Start with the alarm, operating condition and basic checks before replacing parts.

Generator faults can come from the engine, fuel system, starting and charging circuit, cooling system, alternator, controller, protection system or site changeover equipment. The safest and fastest diagnosis starts by recording what the generator is doing and any controller alarm or shutdown message.

1. Generator will not start

Check whether the controller is powered, whether an emergency stop is active, the battery condition and terminals, fuel level and any alarm displayed on the controller. Repeated starting attempts should be avoided if the engine is not cranking normally or a shutdown condition remains active.

2. Engine cranks but does not run

Possible causes can include fuel supply problems, air in the fuel system, an active shutdown, control or sensor faults, or an engine-related problem. Record the controller message and any recent service or fuel-system work before technical diagnosis begins.

3. Generator starts but the site does not receive power

The fault may be in the generator output, breaker, ATS/changeover system, protection circuit or site distribution. Confirm the controller status and whether the generator output breaker or changeover equipment indicates a trip or fault. Do not open live electrical equipment unless you are qualified and authorised to do so.

4. Low or high voltage

Voltage problems can involve generator speed, AVR or excitation components, sensing circuits, alternator faults, connections or load conditions. Voltage should be measured and diagnosed by a competent technician rather than adjusted without confirming the cause.

5. Frequency is too low or too high

Generator frequency is closely related to engine speed. Incorrect frequency can result from speed-control or governor problems, excessive load, engine performance issues or control settings. Persistent frequency alarms require proper diagnosis.

6. Generator overheats

Check for obvious airflow restriction, blocked radiator surfaces, low coolant indications, damaged belts or visible coolant leaks when it is safe to inspect the set. Do not remove a radiator cap or open a pressurised cooling system while the engine is hot.

7. Low oil-pressure alarm or shutdown

Stop operation and investigate a genuine low oil-pressure warning. Check the oil level only according to the engine manufacturer's procedure. Low oil pressure can indicate insufficient oil, a leak, sensor/sender problems or an engine lubrication fault and should not be bypassed.

8. Battery or charging problems

Slow cranking, repeated flat batteries or charging alarms can be caused by battery condition, loose or corroded terminals, battery charger faults, charging-alternator problems or wiring issues. Standby generators also need a healthy starting battery while they are waiting for a mains failure.

9. Fuel-related problems

Contaminated fuel, blocked filters, air leaks, restricted supply or an empty tank can cause poor starting, unstable operation or loss of power. Fuel-system diagnosis should consider the service history and whether the problem started after refuelling or maintenance.

10. Controller alarms and shutdowns

Do not repeatedly clear an alarm without understanding why it occurred. Record the exact alarm text or code, generator make and model, engine model and operating condition. A clear photo of the controller display can make remote technical support much faster.

11. ATS / AMF problems

If the generator operates manually but does not start or transfer automatically during a mains failure, the problem may involve mains sensing, controller settings, wiring, ATS/changeover equipment or protection. Automatic systems should be tested as a complete sequence by suitably qualified personnel.

12. When to stop troubleshooting and call a technician

Stop and request technical support if there is smoke, fuel or coolant leakage, abnormal mechanical noise, repeated shutdowns, overheating, low oil pressure, unstable voltage/frequency, electrical burning smell, damaged wiring or any situation requiring access to live electrical equipment. Never bypass a safety shutdown or protection device to keep a generator running.
