Controlled load testing verifies how a generator performs when real electrical demand is applied.
Generator load testing uses an artificial device called a load bank to apply a controlled electrical demand to a generator. This allows the generator to be tested under simulated operating conditions and helps verify that the engine, alternator, cooling and control systems can maintain stable operation as load increases.
1. What is a load bank?
A load bank provides a controlled electrical load that can be applied to the generator without relying on the customer's normal site equipment. The test load can be increased in planned steps so generator behaviour can be observed at different operating levels.
2. Why test a generator under load?
A generator may start and run normally with little or no electrical load but behave differently when significant demand is applied. Controlled load testing can expose problems that are not obvious during an unloaded test run.
3. Testing through the load range
The generator can be progressively loaded while its operating condition is monitored. Where appropriate for the generator and test procedure, testing can extend to the applicable rated capacity to verify stable power output and the ability of the engine and cooling system to handle the required demand.
4. What is monitored during testing?
Depending on the generator and test scope, technicians can monitor electrical output and engine operating conditions while load is applied. Typical checks can include voltage, frequency, current/load, engine temperature, oil pressure, coolant temperature, charging condition, controller alarms, leaks, abnormal noise or vibration and overall operating stability.
5. Engine, alternator and cooling performance
As electrical demand rises, the engine must produce more mechanical power and the alternator must supply more electrical output. The cooling system must remove the additional heat produced. Load testing therefore provides a useful combined check of the generator set rather than only confirming that the engine starts.
6. Load testing before delivery or commissioning
Load testing can form part of generator inspection, commissioning or verification before a set is relied on for standby or operational power. The exact test scope should be matched to the generator rating, application and project requirements.
7. Load testing as part of maintenance and fault finding
For installed generators, a controlled load test can also assist with preventative maintenance or investigation of problems that occur only when the generator carries load.
