A reliable generator installation starts with the site, airflow and electrical design.
Generator installation requirements vary with generator size, site conditions and the way the set will operate. Positioning, ventilation, exhaust, fuel, electrical protection, earthing, automatic changeover and service access should be planned before the generator is commissioned.
1. Assess the site before positioning the generator
Confirm the available space, access route, cable route, exhaust route, ventilation requirements, noise considerations and distance from the electrical connection point. The installation should also allow safe access for delivery, future servicing and major component removal where required.
2. Provide a suitable base and level mounting area
The generator should be installed on a stable, suitably designed foundation or mounting surface appropriate to the generator weight and site. The set should be level and securely positioned, with consideration given to vibration and drainage around the installation.
3. Protect radiator airflow and ventilation
A diesel generator produces substantial heat under load. Cooling air must be able to enter the installation and hot radiator discharge air must be able to leave without recirculating back into the generator. Restricted airflow can cause high operating temperatures and shutdowns.
4. Plan the exhaust system correctly
Exhaust gases must be routed safely away from occupied areas and generator air intakes. Exhaust routing, silencer arrangement, supports and clearances should suit the generator and site. Poor exhaust design can create heat, noise, back-pressure and safety problems.
5. Consider the fuel system and operating duration
Confirm the generator's integrated fuel-tank capacity, expected load and required operating duration. Where an external or bulk fuel arrangement is required, the fuel system should be designed for the engine and installation, with suitable filling, venting, isolation and leak-control provisions.
6. Size electrical cables and protection for the application
Generator output cabling, breakers, changeover equipment and protection must be selected for the generator rating, voltage, phase arrangement, cable length, installation method and site electrical system. Electrical work should be carried out by appropriately qualified personnel and in accordance with applicable requirements.
7. Earthing and bonding are part of the installation
The generator, changeover system and site earthing arrangement must be considered as one electrical system. The correct arrangement depends on the installation and local electrical requirements and should be confirmed during project design and commissioning.
8. Integrate ATS / AMF controls where automatic backup is required
For automatic mains-failure operation, the controller and changeover system must monitor the mains supply, start the generator when required and transfer the load only after generator voltage and frequency are stable. The system must also return the load to mains correctly and complete the generator cool-down sequence.
9. Leave enough access for maintenance
Filters, batteries, radiator, controller, breakers, fuel system and service points must remain accessible after installation. An installation that is difficult to service can increase downtime and make routine maintenance unnecessarily difficult.
10. Commission and test the complete system
Commissioning should verify generator operation, controls, protection, phase/voltage configuration, ATS or AMF sequence where fitted, charging, cooling and the site's electrical interface. Load testing may also be used where appropriate to verify stable operation under controlled electrical demand.
